This old house … though not like PBS’ This Old House … was reimagined, reconfigured, redesigned by Atelier Delphine Carrère, and is located near the sea in Bidart, France.
Though it’s a traditionally constructed home, with timbers and wood-framing, tiled roof, it has been completely renovated on the inside to liberate the compartmentalized and narrow spaces, and to allow for a mixture of wood and resin, marble and old beams, glass mosaic and leather, while keeping much of the original charm.
The swimming pool was built above the garage so that the home loses no valuable garden space just to park a car.
The entrance used to be quite low, but now opens up to reveal a staircase in folded-steel that slides behind a walnut paneled wall with asymmetrical holes to allow light through. The living room faces the ocean on one side, and the swimming pool on the other.
On the second floor are two bedrooms under the roof, and the master bedroom with its own dressing space in lacquered wood. The bathroom, in emerald mosaic, can be seen from the bed by a glazed wall, allowing the natural light to cross all the space.
It really retains the essence of the old home, while bringing in sleek modern surfaces … plus, you know, it’s French.

This house had me on the outside immediately! And I loved the inside too....except foe the all marble room? That's was too clinical looking for me.....like a high polished cell, but otherwise what a beauty.
